Etsy Digital Product License for Pakistan Sellers: Personal, Commercial, and Extended Use (2026)

A license is the written permission you give a buyer to use your digital file, and its limits. Etsy does not supply a standard license for digital downloads, so the seller writes the terms: personal use means the buyer uses the file for themselves only, commercial use means the buyer may sell finished physical products up to a stated number, and extended use raises those limits to wholesale and print on demand, while the file itself always stays yours. This guide gives you one definition for each license, copy and adapt wording for all three, where to put the license so the buyer sees it before buying, and the promises never to make.

What a license is, and why Etsy sellers write their own

When a buyer purchases a digital download, they do not buy your design. They buy permission to use it, and the license is the written form of that permission. Etsy does not supply a standard license for digital downloads, so the seller writes the terms: what the buyer may do, what they may not do, and, for commercial use, how many finished items they may sell. Without those written terms, every buyer invents their own version of the deal, usually the version that suits them best.

The license also protects you in the other direction. A buyer who paid for a personal use planner and then finds your SVG on a mug for sale has a clear line to quote, and so do you. A license is not a lock on a file, and no wording physically stops copying. What it gives you is a term you can point to in a message, in a dispute, and in a report to Etsy, instead of an argument about what was implied.

The three license types, with one definition each

Use these three labels everywhere on your shop, with the same definition each time, so a buyer who reads one listing understands every other listing. Do not invent a fourth label per listing, because a buyer cannot be expected to learn a new license system for every product.

Personal use

The buyer may use the file for themselves only, and may not sell anything made with it.

This is the default for most digital products on Etsy: planners, wall art, invitations, and SVGs for a buyer's own craft projects. The buyer may print the design for their own home, use a template for their own planning, or cut an SVG for a gift they make themselves. They may not sell the finished item, share the file, or pass it to another person to use. If your listing says nothing about a license, most buyers will still assume personal use, but an unwritten assumption is exactly what causes disputes, so write it down.

Commercial use

The buyer may sell finished physical products made with the design, up to a stated number, and may not resell the file itself.

This is the license a small business buyer wants: a crafter who cuts your SVG onto mugs and sells the mugs, or a print shop that prints your wall art for a customer. The buyer sells the finished object, not your file. Always state the number, for example up to 100 finished items or up to 500 finished items. A commercial license with no number is an unlimited license in disguise, and unlimited is a promise you will regret when a buyer scales up. Also state whether print on demand platforms are included or not, because many sellers allow handmade finished items but not third party print on demand.

Extended use

The buyer may sell finished products at a larger scale, including wholesale and print on demand, under the terms you state, and may not resell the file itself or claim ownership of the design.

Extended use is commercial use with the limits raised: a higher finished item number, wholesale orders, or use on print on demand platforms. Price it above the standard commercial license, because it covers more value. Even an extended license never transfers copyright, never allows the buyer to resell, share, or give away your file, and never allows the buyer to sell your design as a standalone digital product. If a buyer wants to do any of those things, that is a separate agreement, not a listing license.

Copy and adapt license wording for your listings

Replace the bracketed parts with your shop name, your number, and your print on demand position, then use the same text in the listing description and in the ZIP file. These templates are general wording for a typical digital product shop, not legal advice for your specific situation.

Personal use license, copy and adapt

This purchase grants you a personal use license only. You may download the files and use them for yourself, including printing copies for your own household. You may not resell, share, give away, or upload the files, in whole or in part, and you may not use them to make items for sale. All designs remain the property of [Shop Name].

Commercial use license, copy and adapt

This purchase grants you a commercial use license for up to [100] finished physical items made with this design. You may sell the finished items you make yourself. You may not resell, share, or give away the digital files, you may not sell the design as a standalone digital product, and you may not claim the design as your own. Print on demand platforms are [included / not included]. All designs remain the property of [Shop Name].

Extended use license, copy and adapt

This purchase grants you an extended use license for up to [1,000] finished physical items, including wholesale orders and print on demand platforms. You may sell the finished items made with this design. You may not resell, share, or give away the digital files, you may not sell the design as a standalone digital product, and you may not claim the design as your own. All designs remain the property of [Shop Name].

Where to put the license, so the buyer actually sees it

Three places, identical wording. First, a short license line in the listing description, near the top of the description, not buried after ten paragraphs of features, so the buyer reads it before buying. Second, a full license text file, named LICENSE or Terms of Use, at the top level of the ZIP or download folder, so the terms travel with the product and the buyer can find them without hunting through subfolders. Third, a short matching line in your shop policies or FAQ, so a buyer who checks your shop rules finds the same answer. One license per listing, written the same way in all three places.

What never to promise in a license

Never promise unlimited commercial use unless you mean it, never promise that the buyer owns the copyright, never promise print on demand rights if your price was set for handmade finished items only, and never license rights you do not own. A license for your original design does not grant rights in a character, logo, font, or stock element inside it that belongs to someone else. If a buyer asks for something outside your written license, that is a new agreement with a new price, not a free upgrade to the listing they bought.

5 license mistakes Pakistan sellers make

No license line anywhere

A listing with no license line leaves the buyer to guess, and buyers guess in their own favour. One sentence in the description, personal use only or commercial use up to a stated number, prevents most license arguments before they start.

License only inside the ZIP file

A license file inside the download reaches the buyer after payment, which is too late to set expectations. Put the short license line in the listing description where the buyer reads before buying, and put the full text in the ZIP as well, so the terms travel with the product.

Contradicting license lines

A description that says personal use only, a ZIP file that says commercial use allowed, and a shop policy that says something else again leaves you with no defensible position. Use one license per listing, write it the same way in all three places, and change all three when you change one.

Commercial use with no number

The words commercial use on their own, with no finished item limit and no print on demand position, are an open ended promise. A buyer who sells 5,000 mugs with your design is not breaking any term you actually wrote, because you wrote none. State the number every time.

Promising copyright transfer, or rights you do not own

A license lets a buyer use your design. It never transfers your copyright, and it never grants rights in someone else's characters, logos, or fonts. If your design uses elements you do not own, you cannot license those elements to anyone. The copyright guide explains where that line sits for Pakistan sellers.

Frequently asked questions

What is an Etsy digital product license?

A license is the written permission you give a buyer to use your digital file, and the limits on that permission. It says what the buyer may do, personal use or commercial use, how many finished items they may sell if commercial use is allowed, and what they may never do, which is resell the file, share it, or claim it as their own. Etsy does not supply a standard license for digital downloads, so the seller writes these terms in the listing.

Does the buyer own my design after buying it?

No. The buyer buys a license to use the file, not ownership of the design. You keep the copyright, and you keep the right to keep selling the same design to other buyers. That is why every template in this guide ends with the same line: all designs remain the property of your shop. A buyer who wants ownership of a design needs a separate custom agreement, not a listing purchase.

What is the difference between personal use and commercial use?

Personal use means the buyer uses the file for themselves only, with no selling. Commercial use means the buyer may sell finished physical products made with the design, up to a number you state, while the file itself stays yours and may never be resold. Extended use is commercial use with higher limits, for example wholesale or print on demand. Those three labels, used the same way on every listing, are the whole system.

Can a buyer resell my digital file?

Not under a personal, commercial, or extended license as written in this guide. All three forbid reselling, sharing, or giving away the file, and forbid selling the design as a standalone digital product. If a buyer wants to resell your file itself, that is a resale or PLR arrangement, which is a different deal from a listing license, and it does not make someone else's design original on Etsy either, as the copyright guide explains.

Do I need a separate listing for a commercial license?

You have two honest options. You can sell one listing with a personal license and a second listing, or a listing variation where Etsy allows it, priced higher with a commercial license. Or you can sell one listing and state in the description that a commercial license is available on request, then agree the number and price in messages before the buyer orders. What you must not do is advertise commercial use in the title and then deliver a personal license in the ZIP.

Where should I put the license wording?

In three places, with identical wording. First, a short license line in the listing description, so the buyer reads it before buying. Second, a full license text file inside the ZIP or download folder, at the top level of the folder, so the terms travel with the product. Third, a short matching line in your shop policies or FAQ, so a buyer who checks there finds the same answer. One license per listing, written the same way everywhere.

What do I do if a buyer breaks the license?

Start with a polite message quoting the exact license line from your listing, and ask them to stop. Many breaches are misunderstandings, a buyer who did not read the terms, and a quoted line resolves them. If the breach continues, or the buyer is reselling your file on Etsy, report the listing through Etsy's reporting tools with your original listing and license text as evidence. Be honest with yourself about the limit: a license line is a clear term you can quote, not a lock on a file, and it cannot physically stop copying.

Etsy digital product license kya hoti hai?

License ek likhi hui ijazat hoti hai jo batati hai ke buyer aapki file ke saath kya kar sakta hai aur kya nahi. Personal use me buyer file sirf apne liye istemal kar sakta hai, bech nahi sakta. Commercial use me buyer design se bani hui tayyar cheezein, jaise mug ya shirt, ek muqarar tadaad tak bech sakta hai, lekin file ko dobara bech nahi sakta aur na apni keh sakta hai. License ki line listing ki description me likhein taake buyer khareedne se pehle parh le.
